Introduction

Many of the Khajuraho temples are from the 10th century. Also, historical records tell that Khajuraho had 85 temples by the 12th century. Since historical records note that the Khajuraho temple site had 85 temples by the 12th century. And, they cover an area of over 20 square kilometres. Yet, only about 25 temples are in good condition and cover an area of over 6 square kilometres. Furthermore, of the various surviving temples, the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is one major attraction. Short History

The 25 temples at Khajuraho represent the brilliant burst of artistic flowering. Which took place under the generous patronage of the powerful Chandela rulers. They made Khajuraho their peacetime capital. The remoteness of temple’s location saved them from the ravages of Islamic raiders. They were hidden in a dense forest for more than 700 years. As a result, left abandoned. Until 1838 when they came to the notice by Captain TS Burt of Bengal Engineers. The temple site is within Vindhya mountain range in central India

Most noteworthy, Khajuraho also receives services from Civil Aerodrome Khajuraho (IATA Code: HJR). In addition, it also serves Delhi, Agra, Mumbai and Varanasi. The site also has Railways service. The railway station is just six kilometres from the entrance to the monuments. Khajuraho temples were very active until the end of 12th century.

The monuments are about at a distance of 10 km and 50 km from the east-west National Highway 75 and city of Chhatarpur respectively. So that it is always easy for tourists to visit the place for a great Khajuraho trip. The temple site is within Vindhya mountain range in central India. Khajuraho is the centre of this region situated between the local hills and rivers. According to local legends, there were 64 water bodies in the temple complex. And, only 56 of them have been identified by archaeologists so far.

The Magnificent group of temples at Khajuraho , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were built between the 9th and 10th centuries by the Chandela dynasty which dominated Central India at that time. The most impressive of the temples is the Kandariya Mahadev , which represents the pinnacle of North Indian temple art and architecture, Its complex yet perfectly harmonious compositions , and its exquisite sculptural embellishment . Over 800 sculpture cover the temple , depicting gods and goddesses , beasts and warriors , sensuous maidens , dancers , musicians , and of course , the Erotic scenes for which the Khajuraho temples are famous.
